Thanks Letch. I agree the print is still beautiful and usually makes the reproductions pale by comparison, but they did make some amazing books.

Funny, this. I just saw the Provoke Era show at SFMOMA and reveled in seeing those beautiful prints. I've seen lots of these images in books and I tell ya, you're missing out if you think those books got anything on a nice print. The huge poster sized images of Takuma Nakahira were especially revelatory. Kawada's photo of the Japanese flag was amazingly silver, beautiful in it's degradation. It is sad that it's so difficult to see prints but though they worked towards books this event showed that they made lots of gorgeous prints. It's a damn shame to view Hosoe's images of Mishima in that book after seeing the print.

I do like books and like the idea but unfortunately the age of mechanical reproduction has let us down. Small sizes, cheap papers and bad repro make for on "okay" viewing experience as opposed to an "ah hah" one. Not that all books are bad but some of what I saw in this show is a shadow of hand puppet in comparison to the print.

Thanks for this post. Bob's having a fantastic fall in 2009. Opening of exhibit at National Gallery of Art in Washington DC on October 11. Opening of exhibit at PS1 in NYC on October 25. Opening of exhibit at Yossi Milo Gallery on November 5. Hopefully this will lead to others appreciating his work.

Thanks for the comment. Printing and selling the books yourself is definitely a good option - but may decreases the potential reach of the book as well (depending on the quality of the work, distribution and your marketing). Rob Hornstra is a good example of a successful contemporary photographer who prints his own books and funds them with advance sales and print offers. With all its problems, POD is still an exciting option for photographers, artist and writers.

I read a number of these essays online and found them very interesting - the comments also. Indeed, I quoted one or two in my Masters.

As you rightly question though, what is the life of such a book? I know a number of people who have published through lulu.com (including myself) with little reward or feedback and there is this danger with this book also. You raise similar points in relation to photography books published through Blurb...

One way to approach to this is, while still producing a book through such on demand platforms, to limit the number and sell them personally rather than through the Blurb/Lulu. This also allows a greater quality control - I have seen and recieved some poorly set out books from Lulu in the past, once with someone-elses book printed in the middle section of the book I had ordered!

Well, I guess I best look to ordering myself a copy...

I saw this during the Sydney film festival - I enjoyed it a great deal. It's very funny. I did think, however, that it was missing something... in part, I think this was because there were so many ideas in the film, that each was unable to be explored in any depth. Still, I gave it 4/5 in the festival polling.

This book is probably one of the best Ive seen in a long while, and keeps getting better with multiple viewings. Its freedom, while remaining cohesive in the way the book is constructed, is very inspiring, visually and emotionally.
Until now your blog has an impeccable selection of works. Thanks, I look forward to discovering something I might not have heard of through you since our tastes seem akin.
